In the churchyard of Witton Gilbert on Friday, the remains of Mr Thomas Ellison were laid at rest,
in the presence of a large gathering of relations, friends and acquaintances.
Mr Ellison was an interesting figure in the Chester-Le-Street district.
For forty years he had acted as forester for The Hermitage estate.
Accepting service first under the late Rev. E.H. Shepperdson, he stayed with the owner
of the estate until his death.
Then followed Sir Henry Pottinger, who had married Miss Shepperdson, and who did so much
to improve the estate.
Twenty years since Sir Henry Meysey Thompson married Miss Pottinger, and Sir Henry Pottinger
sold the estate to Sir Lindsay Wood (Baronet), who has added extensive lands to it.
Under each Mr Ellison has been a faithful servant, up to the time of his death,
which followed an illness of a few days duration. He was 67yrs of age.
Mr Ellison was an enthusiastic and successful breeder and exhibiter of poultry.
At one time he showed the Waldridge Brahmas not only at local shows,
but at the great exhibitions including the Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Edinburgh,
with marked success. Latterly he had devoted his attention to the improvement of the Wyandotte varieties. He was a skilful apiarist, and an acknowledged authority on agriculture.
